Mr. Matthew Hight

Matthew Hight’s journey into education started in 2011, a couple years before he ever stepped foot in a classroom. As he and his wife, Melissa, were foster parents to a sibling group of refugees, he quickly began to see the systemic inequities that have been pervasive in the educational system and wanted to affect change for students.

After moving to Texas, Matthew received a Master’s degree in teaching through National University and began teaching in Dallas ISD as the English half of a bilingual pair. He then had the opportunity to be a part of the founding staff at José ‘Joe’ May Elementary where he taught fourth and fifth grade. While there, Matthew was selected to be a Personalized Learning Fellow through Dallas ISD’s Innovation in Teaching program, and flipped his classroom into a blended learning model. The following year he joined the leadership team as Joe May’s STEM Coordinator, providing instructional coaching in Science and Technology. He saw great gains in science instruction throughout all grade levels. He also started a year long Educational Policy Fellowship with TeachPlus Texas where he was coached on advocating for policy change at the local, state, and national levels. He worked on advocating for trauma informed instructional practices and testified before the Texas Senate Education Committee in favor of HB18 which later passed, ensuring that all teachers have training on trauma informed instruction.

After seven years of teaching and coaching, Matthew was selected for SMU & Dallas ISD LEAD Department’s Cohort Nine of the Aspiring Leaders Program earning a M.Ed in Urban School Leadership and his Principal Certification. He started his first year as an assistant principal at John Quincy Adams Elementary in the fall of 2020, amidst the COVID 19 global pandemic. Leading with empathy and trust became engrained as his core values of leadership. In the spring of 2022, he returned to Joe May where he continued the work of ensuring all students’ success.

Matthew and his wife are raising two boys, William (11) and Ephraim (9), and they enjoy family time; whether it be out in nature camping, at home playing games together, or watching Iowa State Football (Go Cyclones!). He is deeply committed to the success of students and his commitment extends beyond his own children to the well-being and educational opportunities of all students in Dallas ISD and beyond. Matthew brings his proven track record of trust based leadership, innovation, and dedication to every students’ success to the Edwin J. Kiest Elementary All-Star team!
